Who runs ELIDE

ELIDE is an Argo Academics project, run under Argo Academics' auspices. Contact for privacy requests: admin@argoacademics.com.au.

What we collect

ELIDE has no accounts. It asks for an email address only if you join the newsletter, or choose to give one on a report or removal form. Each poem you publish stores the redacted text, and optionally a title and a name you choose, shown on the poem as “by NAME”. Anything you type there is public. Please don't put personal details in a title or name.

To limit how often a visitor can make requests, we use a hash of your IP address. The hash uses a salt that changes every day, so it can't be used to identify you across days.

Cookies

• Our hosting provider (Cloudflare) may set its own technical cookies to keep the site running.
• Where ads are shown (see Ads below), Google may use cookies or similar technologies to serve and measure them. Affiliate sites set their own cookies if you follow a link to them.

Ads

ELIDE shows non-personalised Google AdSense ads to visitors outside the UK, the European Union and Switzerland. These ads are not chosen using your browsing history or interests. Google may use cookies or similar technologies to serve and measure them. We do not show ads on link-only poems, on uploaded work or poems made from it, on forms, on the admin area, or in PDFs. You can review Google's ad controls at adssettings.google.com.

Newsletter

If you sign up for the newsletter we store your email address, and the time you confirmed it, to send you the newsletter. We use a double opt-in: a confirmation link is emailed to you before anything else is sent. Every email has an unsubscribe link. Unsubscribing stops the emails straight away. We send the newsletter through an email provider acting on our behalf.

Links to booksellers

“Find the book” links go to Bookshop.org and Amazon. These may earn ELIDE a commission at no cost to you. Those sites have their own privacy policies.

Children

ELIDE is for everyone. Ads are the same for every visitor and are never personalised. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you think a child has given us a name or title, contact us and we will remove it.

Who we share with

Cloudflare hosts the site and its database, and its DNS-over-HTTPS service is used when ELIDE checks a web address you ask it to fetch. Resend sends the newsletter and confirmation emails on our behalf. Google provides ads to visitors in the regions listed above. Project Gutenberg and the Gutendex catalogue are the source of public-domain texts, and we don't send them any personal information.

Your rights

You can ask us what we hold about you, or complain to your local data protection regulator. To remove a poem you published, use the removal form with its share code, or email us. Anyone can use Report this poem on a poem page; reports are read by a person before anything changes.

Reports and removal requests keep the poem's code, the reason you gave, and your email only if you provided one. Uploaded text is kept for 12 months, then deleted with any poems made from it.
